Synopsis from Goodreads:

The untold stories behind The Office, one of the most iconic television shows of the twenty-first century, told by its creators, writers, and actors

When did you last hang out with Jim, Pam, Dwight, Michael, and the rest of Dunder Mifflin? It might have been back in 2013, when the series finale aired . . . or it might have been last night, when you watched three episodes in a row. But either way, fifteen years after the show first aired, it’s more popular than ever, and fans have only one problem–what to watch, or read, next.

Fortunately, Rolling Stone writer Andy Greene has that answer. In his brand-new oral history, The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s, Greene will take readers behind the scenes of their favorite moments and characters. Greene gives us the true inside story behind the entire show, from its origins on the BBC through its impressive nine-season run in America, with in-depth research and exclusive interviews. Fans will get the inside scoop on key episodes from “The Dundies” to “Threat Level Midnight” and “Goodbye, Michael,” including behind-the-scenes details like the battle to keep it on the air when NBC wanted to pull the plug after just six episodes and the failed attempt to bring in James Gandolfini as the new boss after Steve Carell left, spotlighting the incredible, genre-redefining show created by the family-like team, who together took a quirky British import with dicey prospects and turned it into a primetime giant with true historical and cultural significance.

Hilarious, heartwarming, and revelatory, The Office gives fans and pop culture buffs a front-row seat to the phenomenal sequence of events that launched The Office into wild popularity, changing the face of television and how we all see our office lives for decades to come.

I received a copy of this title via NetGalley. It does not impact my review.

The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: An Oral History will be available March 24, 2020.

The Office is one of my all time favorite tv shows. I can’t even tell you how many times I have binged it (though I often skip those last two dumpster fire seasons after Steve Carell left). When I saw this book, I knew I had to read it. I was hoping for lots of behind the scenes trivia and maybe some juicy scandal, but it wasn’t quite what I expected.

The format of the book is mostly excerpts from interviews from people involved with the show – ranging anywhere from cast and crew to Scranton Chamber of Commerce employees. The author did a lot of interviews with these people, but he also utilized other published interviews, quotes from dvd commentary, etc. to fill things in. The quotes are arranged in a way that almost feels like a conversation, but there were often times where it was just quote after quote basically saying the same thing (i.e. everyone commenting on what a hard worker Steve Carell is or how Greg Daniels [the man responsible for adapting The Office from the UK] was the best). It didn’t always work for me and there were a few times where I skimmed through it. Most of the quotes were also from writers, producers, or less central cast members, so I wasn’t always hearing from the people I wanted to the most.

Here are a few things I learned that stood out to me:

  • I’ve heard it said numerous times that the Chili’s Manager in The Dundies episode that bans Pam from the restaurant for being drunk was an actual Chili’s manager, but that’s not true. He was an actor. They weren’t even filming in an actual Chili’s, they had just worked with the restaurant chain to bring in fixtures, etc.
  • Instead of the big dance number at Jim and Pam’s wedding, the original script had Roy riding in on a white horse to try to stop the wedding. Then Dwight takes the horse to Niagara Falls and it was going to fall down them. Greg Daniels was apparently the only one who liked this idea and there were a lot of fights about it before the idea was finally scrapped.
  • Supposedly, Steve Carell wanted his contract to be renewed after the seventh season, but there was change in leadership at the network that wasn’t a big fan of the show and they didn’t try to make any deals about paying him more money, so he left.
  • There was a big debate about whether to make Andy or Dwight manager in season 8 and most people wanted Dwight, but the network wanted Andy because he was a bigger star at the time, thanks to The Hangover movies.
  • James Spader basically took the job because he was broke.
  • The network really wanted a spin-off and they wanted Parks and Rec to be that spin-off, but the creators wanted it to be it’s own show and casting Rashida Jones as a different character ensured the shows couldn’t be related and kind of came across as a “screw you” to the network. There was also talk of doing a family-centered spin-off and everyone was annoyed when Modern Family came out using their mockumentary style.
  • Most of the cast and crew considered Steve Carell leaving the end of the show. (I 100% agree with this.)
  • There was a plan to kind of reboot the show in season ten with a new cast and that’s why “New Jim and Dwight” were brought on, but then they decided to end after season 9 because the network wanted to work on developing new shows and the writers were pretty burned out.

Overall, there were enjoyable things in the book, but I wouldn’t consider it a “must read” for The Office fans. While there was definitely a sense of all the the cast and crew being family and loving the show, there was also a whole lot of negativity and blame coming across and it kind of made me like the show less instead of more. It will still be one of my go-to binge shows, though.

Overall Rating (out of 5): 3 Stars

Top Ten Tuesday: Bingeworthy TV Shows

I missed this Top Ten Tuesday topic recently and since tv is my second love, I still wanted to participate in it. So here is my list of Top Ten Bingeworthy TV Shows.

30 Rock

1. 30 Rock. This was always one of my go-to’s. It’s so funny. I can’t begin to tell you how sad I am that it’s not on Netflix anymore. I only have the first two seasons on dvd and I need to remedy that.

10 Types Of People In A Friend Group As Told By "Parks And Recreation"

2. Parks & Rec. Another go-to. I actually watched this entire series so many times that I had to take a little break from it. Ben & Leslie are one of my all-time OTPs.

Brooklyn Nine Nine! LOVE this show! Can't wait for the new season to begin!!

3. Brooklyn 99. This is probably my favorite show that is currently on tv. I love the cast and the humor. And Jake and Amy! I’m so happy that NBC picked this up after Fox cancelled it.

new girl is seriously my favorite show next to friends and big bang theory!

4. New Girl. I binge this show probably once a year or so. It’s great when you’re in the mood for something quirky.

The Office<<< that awkward moment when Angela is the tallest XD and I love how Phillis has her hand on the doorknob like " get me out of this hell hole."

5. The Office. While this show definitely lasted a few years longer than it should’ve, I still love it. I’ve been watching this one a lot more recently than I had in awhile and it’s not getting old yet. Jim and Pam are my OTP (we’ll just pretend the last season never existed).

Community- possibly one of the most brillant and well written comedies

6. Community. This is one of my favorite shows ever. It pains me to admit the last couple seasons were not very good, though. Still, we got our 6 seasons and I’m still waiting for the movie! #SixSeasonsAndAMovie

Bellarke through out the season finales. I wonder if it was Jason Rothenburg's idea to end the world long before season 5. It almost happened in season 4. #bellarke

7. The 100. I never really cared about this show until recently. While watching the most recent season I decided to binge it from the beginning as there was a lot that I missed. It’s definitely better to watch in binge-format. And I’m all about #Bellarke.

life unexpected: WHY DID THIS SHOW ONLY HAVE 2 SEASONS :'(

8. Life Unexpected. I didn’t watch this show when it was on tv, but I’ve binged it a couple of times now on Netflix. It’s only two seasons so it doesn’t take long and it’s enjoyable.

Gilmore Girls

9. Gilmore Girls. How many times have I watched this series? Far too many to count. This was probably one of my first binge-watching experiences. My college roommates and I used to watch this for hours at a time.

younger tv land - Google Search

10. Younger. This is a great show to binge watch! I didn’t watch it until right before season 4 started and I binged the first 3 seasons right before.

What are some of your favorite binge-worthy tv shows?

Top 5 Wednesday: Series That Got Worse with Each Season

top-5-wednesday

This week’s Top 5 Wednesday is: Series That Got Worse with Each Book/Season. I decided to go with my second love, TV series, instead of book series. These may not be series where each season was worse than the one before, but ones that maybe had several great seasons before they started to deteriorate.

Love this show sosososo much! Absolutely amazing. Cannot wait for it to come back! My Wednesdays are just not the same without it.:

1. Reign (The CW). I’ve never been a die-hard fan of this series, but I did enjoy most of the first season and felt the second season was not nearly as good. The third season was basically awful. I recently saw that the up-coming fourth season will be it’s last and I can’t say I’m sorry to see it go.

The popular sitcom's ninth and final season transpires almost entirely during the wedding weekend of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders). The series moves to Long Island as the hap

2. How I Met Your Mother (CBS). I had a lot of love for this show for many years, but the last few seasons definitely fell into awful territory and should have ended way before it did. The only reason I even decided to watch the last season was because it was it’s last season (and don’t even get me started on what a joke the final episode was).

The Office: Season Three-Have a great laugh for only $19.99!! Its a steal there is only 1 left in stock!!!! Just click on the picture!!:

3. The Office (NBC). It kind of pains to me to include this show on the list because I do still consider it one of my all time favorites. However, it’s another series that hung on a little too long. It should have ended when Steve Carrell left the show. Sure there were a handful of episodes after that were still pretty good, but only a handful over 2 seasons is just sad.

Glee - kind of went off and on with liking this show, but in the end, the music always brought me back. Not sure if I'll continue to watch without Rachel, Finn, Mike, Puck, Quinn, etc...:

4. Glee (Fox). I was kind of obsessed with Glee when it first started. I just made me happy (gleeful even). But somewhere in the second or third season the storylines seemed to keep repeating and once half the original cast graduated I thought it really went off the rails. I stopped watching soon after that.

Bones: The Complete Series Seasons 1 - 10 (DVD)

5. Bones (Fox). I enjoyed this series for many years. I loved the interactions between Booth and Bones and kept waiting for them to finally get together. Then they did and I was like…meh. I just kind of gradually stopped watching this show, forgetting about episodes here and there until I finally just gave up. I haven’t watched it in a couple years now.

Did you watch any of these shows? Do you agree? What series (book or tv) did you find to get worse over time?
