I feel like 2019 was an overall disappointing reading year for me. There were several books I was really looking forward to and they just let me down. The following are the books I had the highest expectations for and ended up giving only 2 or 3 stars.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey
99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne
Life and Other Inconveniences by Kristan Higgins
Woman in the Water by Katerina Diamond
The Map from Here to There by Emery Lord
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Haven’t read any of these, but wanted to try Ninth House… not sure if i had a lucky escape or what 😀 I think i’m going to give it a go, because i’m sort of curious but i have a feeling it won’t be my sort of book either.
I hope you end up enjoying it more than I did. I have seen several glowing reviews on it. It definitely wasn’t for me, though!
I totally should have put that Kristan Higgins book in most disappointing on my list. I forgot about it. Everyone hated 99 Percent Mine, but I didn’t mind it. I think that’s because I went in knowing people didn’t like it as much as her first book.
I felt pretty disenchanted with Kristan Higgins as a whole in 2019. That book, plus the book signing I went to kind of put me off her. Though I do have fond feelings for her Romance backlist. There’s something to be said for waiting a bit to read a hyped book. Being able to set your expectations a little lower can end up making the book more enjoyable.
I agree!
My reading year was quite disappointing too and Ninth House and The Starless Sea were amongst them.
I’ve been seeing a lot of people that have been agreeing with us that 2019 was a pretty off year. Hopefully 2020 will be better for us all!
I was not a fan of 99 Percent Mine either. I’m hoping her upcoming release is so much better than this one.
I didn’t even realize she had another book coming up! I just added it to my TBR. Fingers crossed it’s more like The Hating Game than 99 Percent Mine!
I’m crossing mine too. I need another good book from her!
2019 was a pretty meh year for me as well. Here’s to lots of 5 stars in 2020.

Ugh, 99 Percent Mine was such a let down. I’m not even adding her next book to my TBR, yet. I have been seeing the title on Goodreads but I’m so hesitant to even try it!
I just found out that she had another book coming out. I added it to my TBR, but I’m going to be a lot more cautious with it this time around.
99 percent was a disappointment for me too! It’s so different from Hating Game! I haven’t read Ninth House yet but I’m keeping my expectations low for it.
Hopefully low expectations will help you enjoy The Ninth House more than I did!
