October 2018 Recap + Life Updates + It’s My Birthday!

I spent the first couple weeks of October on a blogging hiatus. It was a nice break, but I didn’t get nearly as much reading done as I thought I would. I’ve been in a weird book funk lately where nothing sounds interesting. I really hate when I get like that.

New Job

I got a new job! I’m the Executive Administrative Assistant for my local county library district. I just started this week so everything is still a little overwhelming, but I’m excited about this opportunity. I worked for my previous agency for 9 years (5 years, a gap of a couple years where I worked a couple different places, and then back for 4 years) and it was hard to say goodbye to the people there. They threw me a party my last week there. One of my co-workers is super talented and made a cake that looked like a book. I was really sad when we had to cut into it.

NaNoWriMo 2018

I think we've all had a moment like this...

I’ve done NaNoWriMo a few different years, but have only won once. After taking last year off, I’m planning on giving it a try again this year. Wish me luck! Who else is participating this year? Add me as a writing buddy: Stephanie1.

It’s my Birthday!

    • Thank you! I’m going to try a Domestic Suspense type novel. A guy I used to work with had his sister-in-law live with his family for almost 2 years and she was kind of a psycho and he was always coming into work with stories saying “put this in your book!” so I’m kind of basing it off that – but I’m going to maybe turn her into a serial killer haha. I also had a bunch of stuff happen over the last year with my family that felt like a poorly written domestic suspense, so I thought I might as well actually incorporate that into a poorly written domestic suspense. 🙂 But I’ve been gone all day and need to go to bed soon, so I’m not even going to write on the first day of NaNo so I don’t see this going well…

  1. Happy Birthday Stephanie!! That cake looks spectacular! I understand what you mean about the book funk you are currently in. I was like that a few weeks ago, but then pushed myself to read a few new books I had just bought from Book Outlet, and then I got out of the funk! Hopefully you will get out of it soon and read a great book this month!

    • Thank you! The cake was pretty amazing. And it tasted as good as it looked. I’m glad you were able to get out of your book funk. I did get approved for an ARC recently that I started and liked, but this week has been hard to find time to read.

  2. How did I miss this?! You share a birthday with my dad, so I should’ve remembered! Happy belated Birthday, Stephanie!!!
How exciting about your new job – congratulations!!!! That’s so awesome! I’m really happy for you. And it was really nice of your coworkers to throw you a party – that cake is so awesome. And the bookish gifts!

    • Thank you! (And happy birthday to your dad! haha). First weeks of new jobs are always rough, so I’m glad to have that behind me now. I think once I get into it, it will definitely be a good job. I do really miss my old coworkers, though. I was so blown away by that cake!

  3. Happy belated Birthday and congratulations on the new job!!! A job at a library is perfect 🙂 Your coworker did a great job on the cake.

    • Thank you! I think the last time I saw you I had applied for the position, but hadn’t heard back about an interview and was bummed about it haha. It’s been an overwhelming week and my general aversion to change has been a challenge, but I think it will end up being a good job! And I loved that cake so much!

  4. Happy Birthday! I’m closer to 70 than you, but not too close 😉 ! That cake looks fantastic and congratulations on your new job. Library jobs are perfect for book lovers – that’s why I like mine so much!

      • Yes, I know what you mean. When I started my library job, I hadn’t worked in over 20 years. And although I’m good with computers and social media, there were a lot of general office things I had to re-learn as well job-related skills. It’s great working around books because I get to see and talk about all the new things and trends in the reading world.

  5. Happy belated Birthday Stephanie!!! And oh my God, not only did you get your hands on a nice-sounding job, you got some of the coolest work colleagues ever! That cake looks amazing, and I bet it tasted just as good as it looked! Hope November will be a blast for you too. Happy reading!
