I would probably choose a Rainbow Rowell book, either Landline or FanGirl. I haven’t read any of her books, so I would let you recommend her best one for me to start with.

Rainbow Rowell is always an excellent choice! Between those two books I would say it would depend on your reading mood. FanGirl if you want something YA, adorable, and light (with a couple heavier themes, but never TOO heavy). Landline if you want adult with a little more substance. Both are wonderful, though!

Yay, a surprise giveaway! Hmm…there are several books here that I haven’t read yet. I’d probably go with Dangerous Girls or The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. Thank you for hosting the giveaway and I hope you buy yourself a book or two as well!

Tax refunds are great! Of course, they are less great when you have to use the whole amount to pay bills. They are more depressing after that. I had money, but it is gone now. (opens and closes empty hand sadly)
Haha they are a bit bittersweet. I usually just out my refunds in savings, but this one is such a pitiful amount I might as well just spend it haha

This year is my first year that I will have the write-offs related to book publishing so I am curious if you or maybe a guest author can give me (& others?) some advice.
I have spent a lot more money than I’ve made so far. Although my Kickstarter campaign paid for the editing, there was still the cover design and the formatting, and even though a fellow author was willing to mentor me on uploading, I felt like I couldn’t stand the stress of trying to do that myself.
Then I made the mistake of paying to rent the beautiful Woman’s Club in my little city which besides being $100/hr., it turns out that I had to pay for set-up and clean-up time too. I passed out so many fliers and had teachers posting them. I had gotten applause from middle schoolers and high schoolers alike so I was sure there was going to be a LOT of people there. They were approx. 35 people, the majority friends of mine or my husband’s. I could have done this at my home.
I didn’t even mention the food, most of which ended up going home with us or other guests.
Three weeks later, I had a potluck at my house with only a slightly smaller audience.
Then I flew to Upstate NY where my sister helped me have a small gathering. We bought lots of refreshments for that event too, only to take most of it back home.
I was finally on a panel that my ex-publicist/social network person organized with an amazing Barnes & Noble PR guy. That one cost me nothing. Thank you, kind people.
And I forgot the cost of the publicist/Social Networker.
I am concerned that the IRS (damn, I almost wrote IRA!) will thank that I am spending too much money on my book.
I read somewhere that you are allowed three years of not making a profit and then you are supposed to call it a hobby. Does that sound right to you? And what happens if it IS considered just a hobby? No write-offs?
Well, anyway, I thought I would ask you as you seem to understand these issues other than most.

Geez, every time I don’t re-read my posts, I find that autocorrect has twisted my words. Of course the IRS won’t thank me, but they may “think” my expenses are excessive. And you seem to understand these issues “BETTER” than most.

That’s good to hear that others have (the right – haha) similar opinions. Pretty much every review I’ve read of it was glowing. But I fully support people deciding for themselves.
Hopefully I’ll like it since it sounds like such a promising series! I respect your opinion though
